  September 07 Newsletter

Hola everyone welcome to our September E Newsletter.  Please email any thoughts or contributions to mike@nzsailing.net

1. Winter Race Programme Completed

Both the Winter Racing Series and the Winter Twilight Series finished last week.  We had over  60 sailors taking part in these competitions and provisionally it looks like Robert Pasco may have won both series.  Well done Robert, I will confirm results and prizes on my return from Spain.

2. Spring & Twilight Winter Race Programme

The 07-08 Twilight Series will start on Tuesday 9th October and the Spring Series will start Sunday 14th October. www.nzsailing.net has again sponsored prizes for these series and they are structured so that everyone has a chance to win, whether you sail an Optimist, Zephyr, 4.7, Radial, Laser, or Rooster 8.1.  Follow the links below for details of the Racing and to check out when you are OOD.  On the Spring Series Schedule I have noted when large Laser Regatta are being held at the same time as we have quite a busy racing schedule leading up to the 2008 Laser Nationals & Laser Worlds.

They key to giving everyone a chance depends on the OOD.  It is important that the OOD sets correct courses for each class and follows the instructions on the Race Schedule.  If you have any questions please talk to Mike Pasco or Mike Jones on the day that you are Rostered to be OOD.  As the number of boats increases we will need to have another Safety Boat on the water.  For the future series we will allocate an OOD and Safety Boat person for each race day.  Can those parents and members who do not sail but would like to help out with the safety boat duty please email mike@nzsailing.net

3. Manly Sailing Club has boats available for members

The Committee has been pleased with the successful introduction of the Laser 4.7 & the Manly Sailing Club Lasers and the increased membership and sailing activity that has been generated.  The club now has at total of eight 4.7 Rigs & two Lasers available for members use.  The demand for the 4.7 Rigs & Lasers continues to rise and the committee has decided to buy another two Lasers.  The Committee has recently confirmed the rules for use of this club equipment.

Rules for Use of Club Equipment

  1. Hulls are intended for use by 1)LTS students first then for 2)Club members who don't own a laser then for 3)Club members who own there own boat.
  2. priority within the groups above will be decided on a first come first served basis
  3. 4.7 Rigs should be left at the club after use so that all members can use them.  A Sailor may use a Club rig for a Season then they must buy their own.
  4. Members wanting to take and use the club equipment at Regatta at other locations need to get permission from a committee member first.
  5. At the clubs discretion any damage occuring to the club Laser gear while in use is to be made good at the borrowers expense.
  6. A committee member or appointed club officer has overriding discretion of when the club Lasers may be used, on any day and by whom. Permission from that person is required prior to use.

4. Laser training & coaching in Spring & Summer 07

Thank you everyone who has indicated a interest in this.  The NZLA is currently arranging a coaching and training programme leading into the Radial Worlds in 2008 which would be held the same time as our planned programme so I have put ours on hold as a lot of the people who were interested in our programme will be attending the NZLA one.  If you want to register for the NZLA programme please email Sarah nzlaser@clear.net.nz If you will not be attending the NZLA programme please email me if you are still interested in the doing something at Manly and I will look at arranging a couple of days that don't clash with Regatta and the NZLA programme. mike@nzsailing.net

The Club recently held two very successful events.  The Laser 4.7 Coaching Camp & Icebreaker Regatta.  Thanks to all the members and friends of the club who volunteered to make these two events so special.  Members to do well were Murray & Sara Thom & Mark Page. Follow the links below for full daily reports plus lots of good photos of club members competing.

Laser 4.7 Camp 2007          Icebreaker 2007

A large number of Sailors form Manly competed at the Win Champs in @ Murrays Bay but I am sorry that I have not had any reports.  Looking at the results.  Sara Thom came 2nd in the Laser 4.7.  I am guessing that Murray Thom was first Master.  Mike Jones managed sail in the Standard Rig & Radial Fleet at the same time so if some one can give me a report I will put it up here!

Mark Page, Mike Knowsley, & Mike Pasco are currently at the World Masters in Spain.  I have been publishing daily reports with photos etc of the complete NZ team at the following link.  After 3 days Mark Page (hopefully touching wood) looks set to Win the World Title, I am 10th and Mike Knowsley is 12th

Club Championships

This year as well as the Twilight, Spring & Summer Series we will have a Club Championships for Laser 4.7, Radial and Standard Rig.  I have nominated on the Racing Schedules specific days that will count towards these Titles.  The Series will be over 12 races made up of 3 races from the Spring Series.  3 races from the Pre-Christmas Twilight. 3 Races from the Summer Series and 3 Races from the Post Christmas Twilight.  3 drops will be allowed in case you are allocated as OOD on the day you want to race in that class.  These will not count for the Champs. Any member can win these title.  So for example on the nominated 4.7 Day I will be sailing in the 4.7!  I hope we can all fun.
