April 07 Newsletter
Hi everyone welcome to our second E Newsletter. Please email any thoughts or contributions to mike@nzsailing.net
1. Winter Race Programme
Due to club member demand we have increased our winter race programme with racing on more Sundays and the introduction of a Post Daylight Savings Twilight Series. www.nzsailing.net has sponsored prizes worth over $700 for these series and they are structured so that everyone has a chance to win, whether you sail an Optimist, Zephyr, 4.7 or Laser. After the first two race days of the Winter Series, we have had 20 sailors taking part and have had winners from each of the 3 classes that have entered so far (Laser 4.7, Standard Laser & Optimist). With 1 discard every six races its not too late to enter! Follow the links below for details of the Racing and to check out when you are OOD

nzsailing.net Twilight Series 07
They key to giving everyone a chance depends on the OOD. It is important that the OOD sets correct courses for each class and follows the instructions on the Race Schedule. If you have any questions please talk to Mike Pasco or Mike Jones on the day that you are Rostered to be OOD.
First prize for the Winter Series is a New Rooster Laser 4.7 or Radial or Standard Sail worth up to $549
For the winner who does not sail a Laser they can choose items to the value of $549 from the nzsailing.net range. There is also prize for participation. The sailor who enters the most races and does not win the series will receive the Boat Whisperer Upwind and Downwind DVD set. If more than one sailor qualifies for the prize there will be a draw to decide the winner.
First Prize for the Twilight Series is a Rooster Titanium Hot Top worth $115.00
Full Results from each Race Day will be posted on the this website within 24 hours at the following links.

2. Manly Sailing Club has boats available for members
The Committee has been pleased with the successful introduction of the Laser 4.7 to the club and the increased membership and sailing activity that the 4.7 has generated. The Club has been successful in getting Lion Foundation funding for another four 4.7 Rigs and the club now has at total of 8 available for members use. The demand for the 4.7 Rigs continues to rise and Members are reminded that these Rigs should be left at the club after use so that all members can use them. A Sailor may use a Club rig for a Season then they must buy their own.
The Committee has decided to buy two older Laser hulls so members without boats can use them. The rules for use of the Club Lasers is the same as for the 4.7 Rigs. So far we have managed to get one Laser and it is stored at the club and is available on Race Days on a first come first served basis. We will be buying a second Laser shortly as demand for the first Laser has exceeded expectations. The picture below shows the first Club Laser and the garage it is to be pushed into for storage.
3. Auckland Zephyr Championships at Manly April 28 & 29
Manly will be hosting these Championships with potentially two club members Gus Gager & Rick Keesing sailing. That means that everybody else will be available to help!! This event will be one of the main fund-raising activites for the club so please volunteer some time over the weekend. Don't worry if you have never sailed in your life, you can still help with the multitude of shore based activities or you may want to go out in a support boat. Please contact Stephen Wagstaff 0800 426 5169 or press on his email address stephen.wagstaff@rodney.govt.nz now to send him information on how you can help.
4. Free Club Instructor Courses
Have you enjoyed being taught to sail or watching your kids being taught to sail? Would you like to give something back to the Community? Over the summer we have had four Learn to Sail courses running during each week but still we have Adults & Children that are waiting to Learn to Sail. We need more qualified instructors. The ARC has provided funding for two Club Instructors Courses (The qualification needed to teach Learn to Sail). The details are:
French Bay Yacht Club (Titirangi)
21, 28 April (2 Saturdays)
Applications close 6 April
Ponsonby Cruising Club (Westhaven Marina)
27-29 April
Applications close 13 April
Please note that these dates may change depending upon demand, i.e. if there is not enough demand a course may be delayed or cancelled. I believe the French Bay course has enough bookings from locals to make it happen, but it is a long way from Whangaparaoa. Alternatively, if we have enough demand from Manly and/or Wentworth, we may be able to get a course held up this way.
5. New Club Members
We have many new members joining the club. Please welcome them. If you don't know somebody go up and introduce yourself. The Committee is still providing one free drink for each sailor after each race day so please use this time to welcome our new members. Picture below is of our newest member and the reason why we have not seen Adam Akehurst around the club. Lance James Akehurst born 27th Dec 10lbs 2oz ! Adam reckons he will be able to handle a Standard Rig better than his Dad!

Learn to race is the next thing to do or come out and join us racing. The next Learn to Race course will be start in Term 4 and will be held on Thursday @ 4.30. Follow this link for a wider discussion of what Manly Sailing club recommends or email me mike@nzsailing.net for more information.
8. Rules? Picture from last newsletter!
I have given up! You all need to buy a rule book from nzsailing.net! Mike Jones correctly picked his son having trouble with his bailer last time. I hope you enjoyed Claudia's Free Bear tonight. That was your prize! Any photo's or suggestions please email me.
I hope to see you all out on the water or helping to run the Zephyr Auckland Champs!
Good Sailing
Mike.
